Gowa Tourism


Gowa
Gowa regency is the neighboring with the capital of South Sulawesi province Makassar. Formerly it was the center of Makassar Kingdom. Its famous ruler was Sultan Hasanuddin, who was entitled “Ayam Jantan dari Timur”. He once achieved the climax of the golden ages and he was very famous as the conqueror of the other kingdoms outside South Sulawesi. The following object are what left to show the glory and heritage of the Gowa Kingdom.
The district capital of Gowa is Sungguminasa, located about 6 km from down town city of Makassar. Tourism event that always held on this regency is purify the Gowa Kingdom Heritage, call it “Accera Kalompoang”.
Fort Somba Opu
Fort of Somba Opu hold the same position as the Fort Rotterdam. Both of them are inheritance of the strong and heroic kingdoms in South Sulawesi. In 1525, The Sultan if Gowa IX named Daeng Matanre Karaeng Tumapa’ Risi’ Kallonna built a castle that was called Somba Opu. In the middle of the 16th century, the castle became a very busy spices port and a commercial centre where many merchant from Asia and Europe anchored there. On June 24th, 1669, it was conquered to Dutch colonial. Basicly this place located into the territory of Makassar, but for cultural history The Fort Somba Opu was in Gowa Regency.
Syech Yusuf Graveyard
Syech Yusuf is one of the famous Moeslem heroes. He was widely known by the people of South Sulawesi as “Tuanta Salamaka”. He was a knowledgeable man who actively introduced and spreaded the teaching of Islam in several country. Surprisingly his grave are found in South Africa, Ceylon (Srilangka), Banten Jaya (Java, Indonesia), and in Gowa (South Sulawesi, Indonesia).
Syech Yusuf was born on July 3, 1626 in Gowa, perceiving against the Dutch colonialists, was exiled to South Africa (Cape Town) and died at the age of 73 years on May 23, 1699, buried on farm in the District Zanvliet Stellenbosch, South Africa. At the request of the King of Gowa, Abdul Djalil on April 5, 1795, the tomb of Syech Yusuf moved to Kobbang not far from the Mosque Katangka.
Gowa King Palace (Ballalompoa Museum)
This is the Royal Palce of Gowa and now it has functioned as amuseum. Built in 1939 and has been restored in the years 1978-1980, located at Sultan Hasanuddin street number 48, Sungguminasa. In this museum you can find historical object, musical instrument, traditional clothes, weapon and various collection of the kingdom ceremonial equipment.
The Old Mosque of Katangka
The Old Mosque of Katangka is located not far away from the grave of Syech Yusuf and the grave of Sultan Hasanuddin. This Mosque was built by King of Gowa XIV named Imangngerangi Daeng Manrabia Alauddin (Sultan Alauddin the firs king of Gowa who embrace Islam. This is the first mosque in Sulawesi, built in the year 1603 and it resembles the architecture of Demak Mosque.
